Senior Year - September/October, '10

Seniors, please note we, the counselors, are scheduled to speak to you on Tuesday, September 21 about the college application process during your English class. Be prepared if you have any specific questions related.

Your rank just came out, good, bad, ugly, it is already there. There is nothing you can do about it now. The only thing left is your application essays which you still have total control over. Please make sure you do the best you can, work with your parents, teachers or anyone around you that you think may be helpful.

Having the right score(s) from SAT/ACT for the schools you are applying to; a presentable resume; being genuinely happy/satisfied with the application essay(s) are simply some of the things that would indicate the readiness for submitting your college application.

  1. For Common Applications, since counselors now can submit Secondary School Report, Counselor Letter, School Profile and Transcripts online, do we still need to request transcripts from the school?

  2. Do counselors send electronic transcripts through TREx for UT applicants? Do we need to submit a transcript request form to the counselor to request an online submission?

  3. How come the school did not publish the names of those National Merit Semifinalists this year? They were always included in the announcement in the past.

  4. Great questions! Some of these I already addressed this time last year. Please go to Older Post, click on Senior Year, then September/October. Something new this year, our new system is not ready for any electronic transmission, like via TRex, everything is handled strictly through US Postal Service until further notice. So, we need a transcript request form, an addressed and stamped envelope for each school you are applying, both in and out of state.

All of the above info, plus more, will be presented to all of our seniors when we visit them in their English classes on this coming Tuesday, Sept. 21st.

We will publish proudly our National Merit Semifinalists. The actual venue(s) will be determined. One thing I can assure you, the info will be made more widely available than we did in the past.

  5. I am applying to multiple colleges with one early action. Should I give all secondary report forms to you at the same time? Should I give all pre-addressed envelopes and the transcript request forms to you or to the registrar?

  6. First of all, I want you to make sure that all the schools you are applying to do not have some kind of restriction on their early action programs, in other words you may not be able to apply to multiple schools with restrictions.

Yes, I want to them to be turned in all together, in separate folder, clearly marked submission deadline, and addressed and stamped envelope for each school.

  7. A question was asked on how to report AP scores. Please go to the following link for details.

A bigger question, since we no longer send any standardized testing scores to any colleges as part of official transcript, it is students'/parents' responsibility to have them sent to appropriate colleges and universities of their choice directly from testing centers like Collegeboard and ACT.

  8. Can you explain application fee waivers?

  9. Generally speaking, most colleges and university will waive their application fee based on one of two pieces of information. One is if a student already has a fee waiver for SAT, granted by Collegeboard. The other is an official letter from the student’s counselor stating the financial need the student is currently experiencing.

Whether or not a counselor decides to moving forward with the fee waiver request, s/he usually needs information such as if the student is on a free or reduced lunch program or some tax return info showing the low household income, etc set forth by Collegeboard for their own fee waiver guidelines.

No.1 Myth: Getting an application fee waiver might not put an applicant in the most favorable position in the admission process.
